Matthew Schellhorn joined soprano Susanna Fairbairn to give the World Premiere of John Duggan's The Owl and the Pussycat in Oxford during a recital that also included music by Debussy, Poulenc, Vaughan Williams, Britten and Colin Riley.

The work is a pithy and charming setting of Edward Lear's famous text.

The Owl and the Pussycat is one of Edward Lear's best known nonsense verses, which I learned as a child alongside poems by the likes of Spike Milligan. I have tried to capture the fun inherent in the poem: the delight in rhyme, the fantastical scenes and the quirky language. In some ways I was helped in this by my limited piano-playing skills. The core of the piano part is very simple, such that I, or a small child, might be able to play it. I was able to focus more on developing little metric ideas to colour the story. However, I did cheat a little and used technology to add some phrase that help to flesh out the accompaniment but are beyond my own playing skills!
